GeoSTAR Award - 2004
M. Diane Coleman, M.Sc.
Diane Coleman has spent 30 years mapping the direction of geomatics in Canada. Diane has been an active volunteer throughout her career, volunteering with both national and provincial geomatics industry associations, with the Canadian Remote Sensing Society, participating in university and government advisory committees, organizing technical conferences nationally and internationally, publishing extensively in industry publications and academic journals, and presenting numerous conference papers. With each volunteer effort, Diane has successfully educated and informed others about the benefits of geomatics technologies. We would like to nominate Diane for the 2004 Alberta Geomatics Group GEOSTAR AWARD and formally recognize her for her dedication in promoting geomatics at the local, provincial and national scale.
Diane received both her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Western Ontario. While conducting climatological field research in the Cypress Hills she changed her research focus, which led to the completion of her masters degree in remote sensing in 1974, and since then she has not looked back! She worked with Intermap Technologies for 24 years on the leading edge of remote sensing applications development, and was manager of business development with Golder Associates, helping set up their geomatics business in the late 1990’s. Currently, she is providing business development and market evaluation services as principal of EOS.
Diane Coleman is a pioneer in the geomatics community. She was instrumental in getting the AGG off the ground in 1998, and since then has contributed as a Director, and as Chair from 1999-2001. In addition to her roles on the Board of Directors, she facilitated several AGG initiatives, including funding acquisition, strategic plan development and development of program activities. Diane currently sits as Past-Chair on the Board of Directors of the AGG. Previous to her most recent work with the AGG, Diane has held executive positions with the Canadian Advisory Council on Remote Sensing (Chair of two Working Groups), Geomatics Industry Association of Canada (invited member, Geomatics Task Force), Canadian Remote Sensing Society (Chair for 3 years; Chairman’s Award Recipient 1992 & 1991), Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute, Calgary Geomatics Cluster and the University of Calgary Geomatics Engineering Advisory Committee. She was Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing for 3 years and has published over 45 technical remote sensing papers in journals, books and proceedings.
Diane has made a significant volunteer contribution to development of the Alberta geomatics community throughout her entire career as both a mentor and role model to many, which has inspired a tradition of geomatics volunteerism that will last for years to come. We thank her for her contributions and want to let her know that she has made a difference!
